What a WhatsApp QR code actually does
WhatsApp supports a public chat link in the form wa.me/ followed by a phone number, with an optional text message. A WhatsApp QR code simply packs that link into a pattern. When someone scans it, WhatsApp opens a chat with you and puts your message in the typing box.
The customer doesn't need to save your number, search for you, or type anything. That removes most of the friction between "I'm interested" and "I sent a message" — which is exactly where small businesses lose orders.
It works with both the personal WhatsApp app and WhatsApp Business, on iPhone and Android.
Write your number in international format
This is the most common mistake. The number must start with the country code, with no plus sign, no 00, no spaces, and without the leading 0 you dial locally.
| Country | How you dial it locally | How to enter it |
|---|---|---|
| Saudi Arabia | 050 123 4567 | 966501234567 |
| Egypt | 010 1234 5678 | 201012345678 |
| UAE | 050 123 4567 | 971501234567 |
| United Kingdom | 07700 900123 | 447700900123 |
| United States | (201) 555-0123 | 12015550123 |
Before you print anything, scan the code yourself and check that the chat opens with the right name and profile photo.
Pre-filled messages that get a reply
The starting message sets the context of the chat. A good one is short, polite and tells you straight away what the customer wants. Some examples:
- Orders: "Hello, I'd like to place an order for delivery."
- Bookings: "Hello, I'd like to book an appointment. My preferred day is: "
- Restaurant pickup: "Hi, I'd like to order for pickup from the Olaya branch."
- After-sales support: "Hi, I need help with a product I bought."
- Real estate: "Hello, I saw your sign at the building on King Fahd Road and I'd like details."
Add a short reference to each message, such as "(flyer A)" or "(receipt)". When the chat arrives, you know where the customer came from, even before you open your analytics.
One WhatsApp QR code per branch or campaign
If you print the same code everywhere, you'll never know which flyer, branch or package brings messages. Make one dynamic code per placement instead: one for the shop window, one for delivery bags, one for the Ramadan flyer. Each code has its own scan statistics — scans per day, countries, devices and the time-of-day heatmap — so you can compare them side by side.
A dynamic code also protects your print run. If you move to a new business number or want a different message, you edit the code online and every printed copy keeps working. Bulk creation helps when you have many branches: upload a list and create the codes in one go (up to 50 at once on Free).
Smart routing by country or time (Pro)
On the Pro plan, a dynamic code can send people to different destinations depending on who scans and when. Two practical uses for WhatsApp:
- By country: a brand selling in Saudi Arabia and Egypt prints one code on its packaging. Scans from Saudi Arabia open the Riyadh sales number; scans from Egypt open the Cairo number.
- By time of day: during opening hours, the code opens a chat for instant orders. After closing, it can open a different message such as "I'd like a call back tomorrow", or send people to your booking page instead.
Routing works by country, phone language, time, device or an A/B split. It doesn't route by city, so if you have several branches in the same city, print a separate code for each branch.
Where to place your WhatsApp QR code
- Packaging and delivery bags: for reorders, with a frame like "Order again on WhatsApp".
- Receipts and invoices: for support and repeat purchases.
- Shop windows and doors: for people passing by when you're closed.
- Café tables and clinic reception desks: for bookings and questions.
- Flyers, posters and business cards: for new customers.
Size matters. Keep the code at least 2 × 2 cm on small items like receipts and cards, and use roughly a 10:1 rule for distance: a code scanned from 1 meter away should be about 10 cm wide. Leave a clear white margin around it, and keep a dark code on a light background.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the local format with a leading 0, so the chat opens to the wrong country or not at all.
- Printing a personal number that you may change later, on a static code.
- Writing a long message. Two short sentences are enough; the customer can add details.
- Skipping the test. Scan the final file on an iPhone and an Android phone before printing.
- No call to action. A frame with "Scan to chat on WhatsApp" gets more scans than a bare code.
Questions
Do customers need to save my number first?+
No. Scanning the code opens a chat with you directly, without adding you to their contacts.
Can I change the WhatsApp number after printing?+
Yes, if the code is dynamic. Edit the number or message online and the printed code keeps working. A static code can't be changed.
Can I see how many people scanned my WhatsApp code?+
Yes, for dynamic codes. You see scans, unique visitors, countries, devices and times. Scans are counted, not the messages that are actually sent.
Does it work with WhatsApp Business?+
Yes. The code opens a chat with any WhatsApp number, whether it's on the personal app or WhatsApp Business.
