How to turn a link into a QR code, step by step

To turn a link into a QR code, paste the URL into a QR code generator, design the code, and download it. The step that matters most is choosing a dynamic code, so you can fix or change the link after printing. Here's the full process, plus how to track visits and test the code before anything goes to print.

Turn a link into a QR code in 6 steps

  1. Copy the full link from your browser's address bar, including https://.
  2. In QRaft, choose the Website link type and paste the link.
  3. Keep the code dynamic, so you can edit the destination later.
  4. Optionally, add UTM tags with the built-in UTM builder (more on this below).
  5. Design the code: logo, colors, dot style and a frame with a short call to action.
  6. Check the scannability score, download SVG or PDF for print and PNG for screens, then test it.

That's the whole process. The rest of this guide is about doing each step well, because a code that's already printed on 2,000 flyers is expensive to get wrong.

Static or dynamic: why it matters when you convert a link

A static code puts your link directly into the pattern. If the link has a typo, or the page moves next month, the printed code is useless. A dynamic code puts a short link such as qr.linkom.app/AB3DE9K into the pattern, and that short link redirects to your real URL.

Static link codeDynamic link code
Fix a wrong link after printingNoYes, edit and save
Scan statisticsNoYes
Pattern with a long URLDense, harder to scan smallAlways simple
Pause the codeNoYes

For anything printed in quantity, choose dynamic. The Free plan includes 3 dynamic codes, and static codes are unlimited.

Turn your link into a dynamic QR code

Prepare the link before you turn it into a QR code

Most failed QR campaigns fail because of the link, not the code. Check these before you start:

  • Open the link on your phone. People scan with phones, so the page must load fast and read well on a small screen.
  • Link to the exact page, not your home page. A flyer for a Ramadan offer should open the offer, not the shop's front page.
  • Avoid links that need a login or that expire, such as temporary file-sharing links.
  • If you link to a shared file, set it to "anyone with the link can view" and test it from a phone that isn't signed in.
  • For an app, you can send iPhones to the App Store and Android phones to Google Play from one code, using smart rules on the Pro plan.

Add UTM tags to see QR visits in your analytics

QRaft counts the scans. Your website analytics shows what people did after they arrived: purchases, sign-ups, bookings. UTM tags connect the two by labeling every visit that comes from the code.

TagWhat it meansExample
utm_sourceWhere the code isflyer, poster, packaging
utm_mediumThe channelqr
utm_campaignThe campaign nameramadan-2027

The UTM builder adds these to your link for you, so you don't have to type them by hand. Use a different utm_source for each placement. If the flyers and the shop-window poster each have their own code, you'll know which one actually sold.

Design a link QR code that people scan

A plain black square doesn't tell anyone why they should scan it. Add a frame with a clear call to action such as "Scan to book" or "Scan for the offer". Add your logo in the middle and use your brand colors, but keep the code dark on a light background.

The editor shows a live scannability score and warns you when the contrast is too low or the logo is too big. If you create codes often, save your logo, colors and style in a brand kit and apply it in one click.

Test your QR code before you print

  1. Scan the code on screen with an iPhone and an Android phone.
  2. Print one copy at the real size on an office printer.
  3. Scan the printed copy from the distance people will stand at, and in dim light.
  4. Check that the page opens fast on mobile data, not only on your office WiFi.
  5. Open your website analytics and confirm the visit shows your UTM tags.

Print the code at least 2 cm wide, keep a white margin around it, and never place it across a fold or a curved edge. Send SVG or PDF to the printer, because they stay sharp at any size.

After printing: edit, pause and track

Once the code is out in the world, you stay in control. When the campaign ends, change the destination to your main shop page instead of leaving people on an expired offer. If a page is down for maintenance, pause the code and resume it later.

Your dashboard shows scans per day, unique visitors, countries, cities, devices and a time-of-day heatmap, and you can export everything as CSV. On Pro you can go further and route the same code by country, phone language, device or time of day. A weekly email report sums it all up.

Questions

Is it free to turn a link into a QR code?+

Yes. Static link codes are unlimited on the Free plan, and you also get 3 dynamic codes, which you can edit and track.

Can I change the link after printing the QR code?+

Only if the code is dynamic. Edit the destination in your dashboard and the printed code opens the new link on the next scan.

Can I turn any link into a QR code?+

Yes: a website, an online store, a YouTube video, an Instagram profile, a form or a shared file. Just make sure the page opens on a phone without a login.

Will my link QR code stop working?+

Static codes never expire. On QRaft, dynamic codes work as long as your account exists, and if a paid plan ends they keep working for 3 more months before any codes beyond the Free limit are paused, never deleted.
